More about Martin Harris Interiors
Martin Harris Interiors was established in June 2013. Martin Harris Interiors specialises in domestic decorating (including curtaining and re-upholstery), project management as well as corporate design, both nationally and internationally. Through years of working in the decorating industry, Martin identified a gap in the market, where many clients do not necessarily require the full decorating service as much as a guide to refresh curtains and to re-upholster existing furniture and therefore choosing and sourcing suitable fabrics. In his experience, people are sometimes intimidated by a decorator, particularly when it comes to excessive consultation fees before a storyboard or idea board has been presented. Martin believes that a beautiful home with style and elegance is accessible to a wider clientele.
This has been a key factor in Martin Harris Interiors’ success and he prides himself in always listening to his client’s requests rather than forcing ideas upon them. The main aim for Martin is to work with his client and within their budget to create amazing spaces with the right colours, textures and furnishings. It is from this view point that the expansion of his business was born.
He has started a furniture business to complement the interior side of his business. This came about when he realised most clients prefer custom built pieces to suit their unique taste and available space. Sit & Co. is now a fully fledged business and with the help of his sister, Sue Harris, they are building a full turn-key interior business. You choose, they make it happen.
Martin was born and went to school in the picturesque eastern Free State town, Bethlehem. After school he worked in London for two years. On his return he joined his father (a designer and a building contractor), where they renovated and built homes. He quickly got involved with choosing paint colours and fabrics alongside the clients, and that is where his passion for interior design was sparked and he decided to make a career of it.
In 2001 he moved to Cape Town and worked for Biggie Best as an interior décor consultant for five years. This was a great foundation for his future career as he assisted in launching their new stores in Cape Town. Following that he joined a concierge company specialising in interior decorating of apartments in the V & A Waterfront. He decided to move to Johannesburg and joined a furniture company that specialises in classic furniture and interior decorating. After many years of decorating experience and working closely with well known fabric suppliers, he started Martin Harris Interiors in 2013.
Martin draws his inspiration from Ralph Lauren, Barbara Barry and Andrew Martin. He is inspired by the use of a wide range of furniture pieces, textures and styles; an amalgamation of classic and modern, eclectic but with clean lines. He prefers not to use sets of furniture: e.g. a headboard with two matching pedestals created from the same wood type. The use of natural textures, woven pieces and wood crafted objet in the home is inspired by his fascination with nature and the change of seasons, each season bringing its unique colours and textures. Martin Harris Interiors is known for a beautifully balanced combination of interesting pieces of furniture, bringing old and new together.
Martin has no specific style and has the ability to identify and compliment his client’s style. By combining the old and new, using bespoke pieces of furniture, adding fabrics, textures and wallpapers, complimented by beautiful curtains Martin is able to create the look and feel to suit each client’s unique taste and style. Martin has decorated a wide variety of homes, from the country cottage and the seaside home to the executive contemporary home. Since Martin specialises in home décor and styling, he is no stranger to re-using furniture to suit the new look for the home.
